We are not just a Shul, we're family
Chabad of Strathavon was established in September 1999 to meet the growing needs of the Sandton Jewish community. Sandton is the fastest-growing Jewish community in Johannesburg.
We are situated just five minutes away from the hub of South Africa's growing economy. With high-rise apartments and cluster homes shooting up all around us, we are braced for a huge influx of Jewish families and young professionals to the area.
Just around the corner are all the major hotels and we offer an essential service to tourists and foreign business-people. Chabad of Strathavon has tied up with nearby top-notch hotels to offer special rates for visitors. We regularly host guests from abroad for free Shabbat and Yom Tov meals.
In ten years, we have grown tremendously. Estate agents punt homes that are "in walking distance to Chabad". Neighbours, Jewish or not know us. Our humble 20-seater back-room shul has grown into a vibrant little shul. Over the high holidays, we have had to move to larger premises to accommodate the more than 200 attendees. And we're about to open our new centre that will take Judaism in Sandton to a whole new level.
Our community is young and we have many little children at the shul. Our members are motivated and moving forward in their Judaism. More than anything else, everyone who walks through our doors realizes: We are not just a Shul, we're family.
We are poised to become the flagship Torah learning centre in the area. We already offer adult education classes, and plan to expand these and our other activities further.
